Hübmaier, Balthasar

Hübmaier, Balthasar
(c. 1485–1528)
   Rebel and Martyr.
Hübmaier was a student of Johann eck at Freiberg University and he later taught at Ingoldstadt. Initially he was attracted to the teachings of Zwingli, but by 1525 he had identified himself with the Anabaptists. His Von dem Tauf der Gläubigen, published in that year, rejected infant baptism and insisted that a personal adult faith was necessary for valid baptism. He is also thought to have been the author of the Twelve Articles, the main charter of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1525. However, he was forced to seek Zwingli’s protection in Zürich and there he was compelled to recant his opinions. By 1526 he was working independently in Moravia and had returned to his Anabaptist views. Eventually the Austrian authorities caught up with him. He was arrested in 1527 and was burnt at the stake as a heretic the following year.
